The training, held as part of the West Africa Peace Dialogue at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Center was organized by the United Nations Youth Ghana together with other partners.
The workshop offered the ambassadors a deep insight into the goal 16 of the SDGs which details efforts and strategies at “Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.”
The workshop sought to improve as well as build the capacity of ambassadors in their respective roles towards the implementation and realization of the goal.
Speakers of at the event included Dr Ogar Oko, International Coordinator, Global Educators, Nigeria; Lawyer Tanko Musah, Senior Lecturer, Ghana Institute of Journalism; Dr Ande Ivorgha, Regional Coordinator, URI-West Africa; Mr. Ernesto Yeboah, Leader, Economic Fighters League and Rev. Dr. Elias Asiamah, Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana, Legon.
The ambassadors appreciated the essence of the UN tenets on peace since where nations cannot hope for sustainable development without peace, stability, human rights and effective governance, based on the rule of law.
With armed violence, violence, crime, exploitation, torture and insecurity having a destructive impact on a country’s development, affecting economic growth, and often resulting in grievances that last for generations, the workshop afforded the participants the values of advocating against such developments.
The SDGs aim to significantly reduce all forms of violence, and work with governments and communities to end conflict and insecurity.
In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.
Country Head of UN Youth Ghana, Miss Lilian Sally Addo expressed her contentment at the outcome of the training and said more of such activities will be organized regularly to properly equip the ambassadors and volunteers to effectively discharge their roles and responsibilities. Read Full Story
