Mobile Money agents in parts of Ghana have become targets for criminals in recent times as they are attacked, maimed and in some cases killed and their monies stolen.
Officials at the company have begun sensitizing agents on personal safety, information management and how to effectively recruit to avoid recruiting personnel who will not pose as a risk to their businesses.
General Manager for Mobile Money Financial Services at MTN-Ghana, Eli Hini, speaking at this year’s MTN MoMo Agents Awards in Kumasi said processes are underway with the Central Bank to setup an agent registry.
He said this will ensure those on the registry are validated and will be taken off the system if they are caught in any malpractice.
He further said the company will take finger prints and also do a thorough background check on people who want to become agents to ensure that they do not have any criminal records before setting up the Mobile Money business with MTN.
He advised the agents to stop working late into the night to save their businesses from being targeted by robbers.
He said MTN on its part will continue to partner with security agencies to ensure there is a swift response to foil any attack on Mobile Money agents across the country.
Mr. Hini revealed that the company was also working with accredited and recognized insurance companies to develop insurance policies for the agents so they can be catered for during emergencies.
“They should also manage their environment. Sometimes the things you say will expose you. It’s not every conversation you should have with other people. You may be talking with Mr. A, innocently Mr. A will go and disclose it to Mr. B, and is Mr. B that is working with the robbers and tell them this agent has a lot of money and before you realize, you have been attacked. So keep your information and manage it. It is all part of safety,” he advised.
He said MTN has also put measures in place to check their internal staff who may want to divulge the information of subscribers to fraudsters. Read Full Story
