Addressing some delegates and party faithful, the politician who is gunning to maintain his position against his current deputy, Koku Anyidoho, described the current executives as “quinine”; a bitter medicine.
“…in 2014, you [delegates] decided to vote out all the people who worked with me to win two successive elections and brought in new people to work with me. We went into the 2016 elections and lost,” he said in Twi.
Asiedu Nketia chronicled his rise to power and told the delegates that when he was voted to General Secretary, in 2005, the NDC won two elections with the help of the executives he was first voted into office with save three of them.
He added that in the 2014 congress, the delegates gave him people he could not work with, causing the party abysmal and unprecedented loss.
“If you put gari into three bowls and add sugar to one, add honey to another and add quinine to the other, will they taste the same,” he quizzed.
“…so in this case, is it my fault as the general secretary or the people you gave me to work with?”
General Mosquito as he is popularly called, took the opportunity to sell himself and ex-President John Mahama, trumpeting that, with him as General Secretary and Mr. Mahama retained as flagbearer, victory will belong to the NDC.
“Anyone in need requires help. So as we have all joined the party and the party has gotten to a point of need, we don’t have to turn our backs to the party…
“So I don’t want to turn my back to the party. I believe that with my experience, I can help the party to recapture power with President Mahama as our flagbearer to bring the party back,” he noted.
NDC Congress
The NDC goes to congress on November 17, where they will elect their new executives ahead of the flagbearer elections.
The Chairmanship slot and the General Secretary spot are expected to be fiercely contested with former Attorney-General Betty Mould Iddrisu and Dan Abodakpi fighting for the chair and Koku Anyidoho challenging his boss for the General Secretary slot in what some analysts say is political suicide.
