Government presents 105 vehicles to Police

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the receipt of 105 vehicles from the government.

According to a tweet from the official Police handle, the 105 vehicles comprised Toyota Corollas and Toyota Camrys and forms part of government initiatives to retool the Service.

The Deputy Minister/ Information, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei made the presentation on behalf of Government today at the Police Headquarters Operations in Accra.

She said due to advancement in technology, there is always an upsurge of crime so there is the need for the Police to be given logistical support to deliver on its mandate.

She added that 95 more vehicles will be arriving this evening which will also be presented to the Ghana Police Service to complete a fleet of 200 vehicles.

Receiving the vehicles, the Director-General /Public Affairs Directorate, ACP David Senanu Eklu stated that the vehicles will enhance Police operations.

Background

It will be recalled that on February 7 this year, the then Information Minister, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid revealed that the money saved from renegotiating a contract for the purchase of some cars for use by the Presidency under the previous administration, was used to procure a hundred cars for the Police Service.

Mr Abdul-Hamid, explained that with the risk of a judgement debt hanging over its head, government renegotiated with Amalgamated Securities Limited, purchasing only 34 of the initially agreed 43 cars, saving about three hundred thousand dollars in the process.

He said that the remainder was used to purchase 100 Toyota Corollas for the Police Service.
