Here is a list of 6 veteran players you didn’t know were still playing in the Ghana Premier League.
Name: George Owu
Age: 36
Team: Ashantigold
Position: Goalkeeper
As far as legendary Ghanaian goalkeepers go, George Owu’s name deserves a mention. He’s done it all. He has been to two AFCONs, a world cup appearance, an Olympic Games appearance, a World U-20 silver medalist and best goalkeeper in the Egyptian league in 2009, and an unsuccessful trial at Tottenham Hotspurs. Owu was signed by Ashantigold from his boyhood club, Sekondi Hasaacas, last season to help the miners escape relegation. And “Kigali’s’ heroics has now earned him the number 1 spot in C.K. Akonnor’s team and was in goal as Ashgold beat Wa All Stars 1-0 on opening day of the 2017/2019 season.
Alex Asamoah “Makweke”
Age: 32
Team: Techiman Eleven Wonders
Position: Striker
Alex Asamoah is most famous for being the most expensive locally-transferred player after switching from Ashantigold to regional rivals Asante Kotoko for a reported Ghc 200,000 back in 2009. He went on to win the top scorer award in 2009 with 17 goals. Known as “Makwekwe”, Asamoah often spotted a trademark bandage on his lower arm and always tucked his socks in his shin guards to expose his ‘killer calves’. Oh, and he also had the knack of being caught offside quite regularly.
After playing in Korea, Algeria and Burkina Faso, Makweke is back to the Ghana Premier League with new boys Techiman Eleven Wonders and scored the equalizer in their opening day draw with giants Hearts of Oak at the Nana Ameyaw Park in Techiman.
Eric Gawu
Age: 36
Team: Dreams FC
Position: Striker
Eric Gawu ‘Gatete’ is another household name in the Ghana Premier League. Just like Asamoah after him, Gawu was a record signing for Accra Hearts of Oak when he joined from King Faisal where he had truly made a name for himself.
Gawu was a key figure in the Faisal team that made back to back appearances in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2005 and 2006. After sojourns to Qatar and Israel, Gawu returned to Dreams FC in 2015 and has helped them fight for promotion to the Ghana Premier League, twice. He started for the Dawu-based side in their 1-0 victory against Elmina Sharks on opening day.
Name: Iddrisu Yahaya
Age: 32
Team: Techiman Eleven Wonders
Position: Defender
Iddrisu Yahaya and alex Asamoah
The combative defender burst unto the Ghana Premier League scene at King Faisal under legendary administrator Herbert Mensah where he was teammates with Eric Gawu and Kwadwo Poku in that 2005 Faisal team. He went on to have stints with New Edubiase and most recently Techiman City FC two seasons ago in the Ghana Premier League. The 32 year old tough tackler joined Eleven Wonders in December 2017 on a three year deal and could be instrumental in the Techiman side’s quest to stay in the Ghana Premier League.
Name: Emmanuel Ansong
Age: 29
Team: Ebusua Dwarfs
Position: Right Back
Emmanuel Ansong is best remembered for being captain of the Ghana U-17 side that lost 1-0 to Gambia in the Africa U-17 Championship final in 2005. He also led the team to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru where David Duncan’s team were knocked out in the group stage following three draws.
Ansong has played for the likes of Great Olympics, Accra Hearts of Oak, Sekondi Hasaacas and Hearts of Lions, becoming captain for Lions.
Ansong joined Dwarfs from Hasaacas ahead of the 2017/2018 season where he is expected to bring his experience to bear for Bashir Hayford’s team.
Name: Joseph Tagoe “Bobby Short”
Age: 34
Team: Ebusua Dwarfs
Position: Midfielder

Remember Bobby Short? That’s right, the man is still going strong. Tagoe broke into the limelight with Great Olympics before signing for Accra Hearts of Oak in 2005. But he was never quite able to live up to his potential and a move to Nigeria soon followed but that did not work out and he returned home. He briefly retired and even tried out acting, posting teasers of a comedic act on facebook but that didn’t work out either.
Tagoe signed for Ebusua Dwarfs ahead of the 2018 season and will hope to serve a reminder of what made him such a special talent in the mid-2000s. Read Full Story
