Ghana captain Portia Boakye was named Woman of the Match after the Black Queens drew 1-1 with Mali in their final Group D fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Her composed leadership and defensive contribution helped Ghana withstand a difficult second half and secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The Black Queens entered the contest knowing that a victory would guarantee progress, while a draw could also be enough if their goal difference remained superior. Ghana took the lead shortly before half-time when Evelyn Badu headed in Comfort Yeboah’s excellent cross during added time.
Mali responded strongly after the interval and equalised five minutes into the second half. Kadidiatou Diabate’s free-kick deflected off Ghana’s defensive wall, leaving the goalkeeper unable to react in time. Ghana appeared to regain the advantage later, but Badu’s close-range finish was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
Boakye helped keep Ghana organised as both teams pushed for a decisive goal. The result left Ghana and Mali on four points, but Ghana advanced as Group D runners-up behind Cameroon because of their better goal difference.
