NSA awaiting report to determine fate of Accra Sports Stadium

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, says the future of the Accra Sports Stadium will be determined after an ongoing technical assessment of the facility.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Ampofo Ankrah disclosed that a French company commissioned through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation recently completed an inspection of the stadium, with its findings expected to guide the next course of action.

"There was a review of the Accra Sports Stadium just two weeks ago with a French company that has come through the Sports Ministry," he said.

"The report will tell us the true state of the Accra Sports Stadium, whether we need to close down the stadium for a few weeks, months or a year."

The NSA boss admitted that the national stadium is in a poor condition, stressing that cosmetic repairs alone will not address the underlying structural issues.

"The Accra Sports Stadium is in a very terrible state," he said.

"It's not about painting or tightening screws. It's a stadium that was built a couple of decades ago, and we've had renovations, especially when there are major tournaments, and after that it's back to factory settings. That's a cycle that has not worked."

Ampofo Ankrah suggested that a long-term solution is needed to restore the stadium to the standard expected of Ghana's premier sporting venue rather than carrying out periodic renovations ahead of major events.

The Accra Sports Stadium has hosted numerous domestic and international football matches over the years, including Black Stars fixtures, but concerns over its condition have grown in recent times.

The findings of the technical assessment are expected to determine whether the stadium remains operational or undergoes an extended period of rehabilitation.
