Manchester United legend Roy Keane has criticized Kobbie Mainoo’s brother as speculation over the midfielder’s potential move away from Old Trafford intensifies.
Mainoo, 20, who is of Ghanaian descent, has struggled for playing time under manager Ruben Amorim this season. He has featured in just 11 Premier League matches, all as a substitute, prompting discussions over a possible January transfer.
The controversy escalated earlier this week when Mainoo’s brother, Jordan, attended a match wearing a “FREE KOBBIE MAINOO” T-shirt.
Keane, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, described the gesture as unhelpful. “Are you telling me that he can’t sit there for another six months? He might think the manager’s on his way out in the summer. He’s 20 years of age, what’s wrong with sitting and learning your trade?” Keane said.
Keane also highlighted the importance of patience and professionalism for young players. “Sometimes a manager is on your case and what you have to do is prove them wrong. Every day is your chance to show the manager your worth,” he added. He dismissed Jordan’s antics, calling him an “idiot” and warning that even families can create distractions.
Mainoo was reportedly keen to join Napoli in the summer, but Manchester United blocked the move.
Observers will be watching closely to see whether Mainoo can secure a transfer that provides more consistent first-team opportunities, or whether he will remain at United.
