Franco-Ivorian comedian Sacko Camara has launched a unique road trip to experience the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, turning what once began as a joke into a personal mission combining adventure, humour and humanitarian work.
Camara first gained attention in 2023 when he drove from Paris to Abidjan for the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, after jokingly telling a friend he would travel by car when flight prices became too expensive.
That light-hearted remark grew into a bold journey across Europe, the Sahara and multiple African borders. The experience generated widespread excitement among supporters and convinced him to take on another challenge for the next AFCON.
This year, Camara is reversing the route. The journey starts in Abidjan and continues through Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania before reaching Morocco, where the tournament will be played from December 2025 to January 2026. Although he describes the route as “simple on paper,” he expects difficult terrain, unpredictable road conditions and long stretches through remote areas.
More than a symbolic road adventure, the project includes a humanitarian partnership. Camara’s team has joined with the NGO WhatWater to support improved access to clean water in communities they visit. At each stop, they plan to meet local residents, listen to stories and promote water-related initiatives.
For Camara, AFCON represents unity, joy and the spirit of African football. Born in Abidjan but raised in France, he sees the competition as both a sporting celebration and a cultural homecoming for the African diaspora.
While Marrakech marks the final destination, Camara says the heart of the journey lies in the kilometres travelled, the supporters met and the shared love for football along the way. His goal is to arrive not only in time for the opening match but with a story shaped by the people and places that make Africa’s football culture special.
