Auxerre defender Gideon Mensah has expressed pride and excitement after playing a key role in the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Mensah was influential throughout the qualifiers, missing only the final group match against Comoros in Accra, and contributed a couple of assists that helped Ghana secure their spot at next year’s tournament. This marks a consecutive World Cup appearance for Mensah, following his participation in Qatar 2022.
"It’s a very great feeling [qualifying for two World Cups]. Personally, the first time I qualified with the national team, I didn’t really see the importance. But then going to Qatar and experiencing the World Cup, it’s something I’m really looking forward to having again," he said.
Mensah described the achievement as a blessing, noting that not every player gets the opportunity to feature in multiple World Cups. "World Cup is like one of the biggest platforms for every footballer. If you’re able to do it twice, it’s a blessing, and I’m looking forward to it," he added.
The 27-year-old has made 36 appearances for Ghana since his debut in 2019 and has assisted four goals. He is currently in the national team camp ahead of friendlies against Japan and South Korea.
