Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has urged the Black Queens to remain focused on their legacy and national pride amid the ongoing standoff over unpaid bonuses.
Ayew visited the team at their base in Accra on Monday to show solidarity and motivate the players ahead of Tuesday’s 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier second leg against Egypt.
In his address, the former Ghana captain reminded the Queens of their impressive achievement at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, where they finished third to earn a return to the continental stage.
"You guys did something great a few months ago at the WAFCON," Ayew said, as quoted by Sporty FM. "It’s important that you don’t let this legacy be erased by noise and outside people talking [about unpaid bonuses]."
He also appealed to the players to stay united and focused on the bigger picture. "I’ve been there as a player, and you are building something the Black Queens have never had. Don’t tarnish what you’ve achieved because of money. Yes, money is important, I’ll be the first to say that, but it’s about national pride."
The Black Queens, who had boycotted training over unpaid $9,500 bonuses, have since resumed preparations and will face Egypt in the decisive second leg at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
