Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has responded to South Africa’s points deduction in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, accepting responsibility after midfielder Teboho Mokoena was fielded while suspended.
FIFA sanctioned South Africa earlier this week for using the ineligible Mamelodi Sundowns player, who had accumulated two yellow cards before the Group C clash against Lesotho in March. South Africa’s 2-0 win was overturned to a 3-0 victory for Lesotho, with Bafana also docked three points.
The sanction drew sharp criticism from Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, who called for a “thorough investigation into the incompetence that led to this sanction.”
Responding on Thursday, Broos made it clear the blame was shared.
“Who is responsible? I am the coach, so I am responsible. But the technical staff didn’t warn me, the team manager didn’t follow up, the player didn’t say anything, and the administration is also responsible,” the Belgian explained.
The 73-year-old urged focus on the decisive qualifiers ahead. “Stop with it. Just support us like before. We will do everything, 100%, to win those two games.”
South Africa, currently second in Group C with 14 points, level with Benin but behind on goal difference, will face Zimbabwe on October 10 and Rwanda on October 14.
