Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has urged his old club to launch a bold move for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams despite the Spaniard’s long-term commitment to San Mamés.
The 23-year-old, who represents Spain internationally but has Ghanaian roots through his parents, signed a 10-year contract extension with Athletic last summer after Barcelona came close to triggering his release clause.
That new deal raised his buy-out figure to about â¬90 million, underlining the club’s determination to keep him.
Carragher nevertheless believes Liverpool should try to prise the exciting wide man away from LaLiga.
“Yes. I would take the one everyone wants to take. Nico (Williams) is a fantastic player. He scored the first goal against England in the Euro final. Spain deserved to win.
“I know he is your player and he has renewed for 10 years, but I would like to see him in a Liverpool shirt. I know it is not going to happen, but I would like to dream about it,” he told Sky Sports.
Williams has emerged as one of the world’s most coveted wingers since breaking into the Athletic first team in 2021.
He followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Inaki, and has already amassed major-tournament experience with Spain.
However, his loyalty to Athletic Club, combined with Liverpool’s heavy spending this summer and the size of his release clause, makes a transfer to Anfield highly unlikely in the short term.
