Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has come under fire from journalist Alex Crook over his handling of young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
Speaking on air, Crook described the situation as “infuriating” and accused the club of failing to nurture one of its brightest academy graduates.
Mainoo, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents, emerged as one of United’s standout performers last season.
He produced a man-of-the-match display in the 2024 FA Cup final and impressed again for England at the European Championship, performances which had been expected to cement his place in the club’s midfield plans.
However, the 20-year-old has found himself marginalised under Amorim this term.
According to sources close to Mainoo, the player believes the Portuguese coach does not fully trust him, with his opportunities limited despite strong training performances.
Crook argued that Amorim’s rigid tactical approach is alienating the club’s top prospects.
He labelled the situation “a dereliction of duty” by United’s leadership, suggesting that the team’s pathway from academy to first team is being blocked at a critical time for Mainoo’s development.
