The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has expressed its delight at the impending return of competitive domestic club football on all levels from Sunday to add further spice to the festive cheer all around the nation.
The Ghana Premier League takes centre stage with nine games to kick-start the 18-team top-flight League competition, followed by the start of the National Division One League, Women’s League and Youth Football competitions in the New Year.
The PFAG, as mother body of all professional footballers in Ghana, is pleased at the prospect of ushering in a new and improved era of competitive club football in the country, and the chance for footballers in the country to exhibit their talents and thrill local football fans once again.
"We congratulate the leadership of the Ghana Football Association and all stakeholders for their efforts at streamlining the domestic game and ensuring the much anticipated return of the nation’s one true passion lives up to all expectations," the PFAG said in a statement on Saturday night.
"We also wish the organizers, teams and teeming football fans well as they look to enjoy domestic football action at all league centres once again after a testing 18-month hiatus.
"Over the course of the season, we encourage fans to pack the various match venues to capacity, and urge all our members to put up their very best as they exhibit their individual brilliance and showcase the team ethic that has long characterized the beautiful game here in Ghana!
"The PFAG also extends its best Christmas and New Year wishes to all during this festive time of the year. May the coming year bring us all glad tidings!"
Ghana is expected to burst back to life this weekend when real domestic football gets underway with the start of the Ghana Premier League after an 18-month hiatus.
Nine matches of the top-flight league competition will be played right across the country on Sunday with 18 clubs in action following months in abeyance.
This will be followed next month with the start of the Division One League, the regional leagues, women's league and youth football.
The country's favourite football competition has been revived to start competitive football activities in Ghana following months of confusion and uncertainty.
This follows the election of Kurt Okraku two months ago as the new Ghana FA and has promised to revive the domestic scene with competitions.
After several months of back and forth, the opening round of matches will underway hopefully smoothly on Sunday when the matches start.
The return of football has brought back excitement normally seen around league centers all over the West African country.
Winner of the Ghana Premier League will represent Ghana at the next Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League next year.
The champions of the MTN FA Cup, which is the knock-out competition, will be Ghana's representative in the CAF Confederation Cup.
