Kumasi, Dec. 15, GNA – The youth have been urged to join the country’s corruption fight by consolidating their capabilities and roles in strengthening public accountability.
They should also leverage their youthful potentials to develop innovative solutions to prevent and curb corrupt practices in the country.
Mr Kwesi Boateng Assuming, the Programs officer of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), said this when speaking at an event to commemorate this year’s Anti-Corruption day in Kumasi.
He said this year’s Anti-Corruption Day, focused attention on the involvement of the youth as a potential formidable force, to bring their strong influence to bear both on their peers and the entire populace, to help stem the calcifying canker.
The event was put together by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is under the worldwide theme: “Empowering Ghana’s youth: a must and sustainable path towards addressing corruption”.
Mr Assuming said there is the need for the youth and all to shun corruption and make robust efforts to stem the intractable menace, which has an inherent danger of not only affecting the present generation but trickling down to posterity.
The occasion was attended by students from second cycle institution and youth groups, including the Adventist Senior High School, the Local Accountability Networks (LANETs), Methodist Secondary Technical School and Youth for Action group from Nkawie in the Atwima- Nwabiagya District.
Participants were told to reflect on the cost and impact of corruption on Ghana’s development and create awareness on the dangers of the practice, since many people engaged in corrupt acts out of ignorance.
Mr Assuming urged Ghanaians to report all corrupt practices to the appropriate authorities for sanctions to be meted to perpetrators.
Madam Jennifer Asuako, UNDP’s Gender Program Analyst, speaking to the Ghana News Agency, said a strong foundation for a moral society must be built starting from the youth, which is the nation’s future.
“This calls for the need to sharpen them as a vital tool in the corruption fight”, she said.
She commended the recent Afrobarometer survey on corruption conducted by CDD-Ghana, saying it provided valuable information to anti-corruption campaigners in the fight.
