Accra, Dec. 13, GNA - President Nana Akufo-Addo has reiterated his appeal to Ghanaians to consume local rice to help maximise profits of farmers, grow the economy and lead to self-sufficiency.
He explained that government had an elaborate plan to make the rice value chain run smoothly, but such plans could work if the public responded in consuming the staple that was produced locally.
The President who made the appeal on Friday at a media encounter at the Jubilee House in Accra gave a signal that once the production increased the government would ban rice importation.
To back the appeal with action, he said a directive has been given to all state institutions, including the Jubilee House, to only buy locally-produced rice.
“I’ve directed all the state institutions and government agencies to use Ghanaian produce, Ghanaian rice”, the President told journalists at the Jubilee House on Friday, during his engagement with the media, adding: “I have started in my home at Nima, and I’ve started here [Presidency]”.
