Community Radio, key to attaining the SDGs

Accra, Dec 5, GNA - Professor Alex T Quarmyne, a Founding Member of the Ghana Community Radio Network on Wednesday said the development and promotion of community radio was key to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations

He said the aim of community radio was to be a voice to the voiceless and to support holistic development:

“At the Ghana Community Radio Network, we like to say what we know to be true and also give “voice to the least voiced”, just like the Sustainable Development Goals, its intent to “Leave no one behind” and our purpose of Community Radio is to enable or facilitate and support development,” he reiterated

Prof. Quarmyne was speaking at a Lecture organised by the Ghana Journalists Association in collaboration with the Ghana Community Radio Network as part of the 70th anniversary celebration of the GJA

The lecture was on the theme: “Community Radio and the Journey to the Sustainable Development Goals”

Prof. Quarmyne said the mission of GCRN was “to grow Participatory Community Radio for all to have a Voice and exercise their rights to communicate for their collective well-being, while envisioning a world of culturally vibrant communities working together for inclusive, equitable and peaceful development”

Mr Kofi Larweh a counseling member of the GCRN told the Ghana News Agency that community radio uses people’s indigenous languages or cultural to communicate to them, facilitating better understanding of policies and thus fuel the much needed sustainable development we all hope to achieve.

Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, an Associate Professor at the Department of Communications, University of Ghana, who chaired the occasion said community radio was the crucial instrument to achieve SDGs.

She urged the members of the Ghana Community Radio Network to ensure that they used their work to facilitate the attainment of the SDGs in Ghana.
