Accra, Dec. 4, GNA - The Ministry of Health says it has received clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit the health professionals who recently engaged in the picketing at the precincts of the Ministry.
From February 2020, those health professionals would be posted to various parts of the country to serve the people, Mr Alexander K.K. Abban, the Deputy Minister of Health, announced on Wednesday.
“Indeed, the leadership of that group was in my office yesterday and saw evidence of this”, the Minister said, at the induction ceremony of the newly qualified Physician Assistants and certified registered Anaesthetists in Accra.
The Medical and Dental Council, Ghana, held the induction for 686 inductees into the medical profession, and charged them to hold on to the high values of the profession.
The inductees were from 12 training schools in the country, including the University of Health and Allied Sciences, College of Health and Wellbeing, Kintampo; the Presbyterian University, Agogo; the Central University College, Prampram; the Narh-Bita College, Tema, and Radford University College, Accra.
Others were from the School of Anaethesia, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi; 37 Military Hospital; the Greater Accra Regional Hospital; and the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, University for Development Studies.
They were from the Anglican University College, Nkoranza, and the Garden City University, Kumasi.
Mr Abban congratulated the inductees saying they were coming out at a time when there were persistent inequality in the distribution of healthcare professionals, especially, doctors and dentists.
He charged them to accept postings to underserved communities where their services were most needed.
Professor P.K. Nyame, the Chairman of the Ninth Board of the Medical and Dental Council, who took the inductees through the Oath of Office, charged them to diligently serve the people.
“We should identify with the people in the communities we serve, if we do this with respect and consideration, the influence you will wield in the community will be immense.”
He, however, cautioned them not to undertake treatments for which they had not been trained and licensed to practice.
“Don’t punch above your weight”.
Prof Nyame urged the training institutions to continue to churn out high calibre graduates to play their important role in the “pyramidal scheme of health delivery in Ghana.’’
Dr Ebenezer Appiah-Denkyira, a former Director-General, Ghana Health Service, advised inductees to abide by the Code of Ethics of the profession, uphold it at all times and execute their duty with dignity and respect.
He appealed to government and other stakeholders to ensure the proper resourcing of health facilities including the CHPS Compound at the local level, as well as provide the better working conditions and accommodation to entice health professionals to the remote areas.
