Accra, Dec. 4, GNA - The Rotaract Club of Accra Ring Road Central has organised a health education on the importance of hand-washing and disease prevention for pupils of Accra New Town Basic School.
The pupils were taught the proper process of hand-washing and its relevance to their general wellbeing.
The club members also donated buckets, washing bowels, liquid soap, sanitizers and tissues to aid the children to practise hand hygiene during school hours.
Rotaract club, a subsidiary of Rotary club, is made up of relatively younger persons between the ages of 18 and 30.
Ms Fafana Ali, the Public Relations Officer and Fundraising Director of the club, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that one of the social responsibilities of the club was to detect societal needs within their immediate communities, and provide solutions to help address such problems.
She said poor personal hygiene in children was a public health concern, which if not tackled, could lead to diseases like cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea.
"As part of our annual Rotary/Rotaract year, the club embarks on a project that benefits the community. This Rotary year, President Grace Sagoe, decided to take an initiative under Disease Prevention and Treatment on the six main tenets of Rotary International."
The six areas are: Peace and Conflict Resolution; Disease Prevention and Treatment; Water and Sanitation; Maternal and Child Health; Basic Education and Literacy; and Economic and Community Development.
The club has, therefore, decided to embark on a personal hygiene and disease prevention drive with emphasis on hand-washing for pupils at the school.
We will continue as a club to find problem solving solutions to our communities, in line with our motto: "Together we transform," Ms Ali said.
Members of the club were elated to see the children demonstrate proper hand-washing, indicating they understood the education.
