Accra, Nov 26, GNA - Mr Benson Tongo Baba, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Talensi Constituency, has appealed to the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission to investigate the cause of death of some workers of Shaanxi Mining Ghana.
“If the company is found not to have put in right and enough safety measures, it should be sanctioned accordingly,” he said.
At least, eight workers lost their lives as a result of the mine pit disaster last Monday.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the Parliament House in Accra, Mr Baba said he was worried about rampant disasters at the mines.
Mr Baba stressed that a thorough investigation into the incident was required so that enough safety measures would be put in place to prevent future recurrence of such tragedies.
Also the inquest should find what terms of engagement were for the deceased, he added, and what would be the benefits for their dependents.
“If the company is found to have been negligent in some ways, the Minerals Commission should take necessary decisions and apply appropriate sanctions,” he said.
Mr Baba urged the Shanxi Mining Company to do more in its Corporate Social Responsibility by improving the road leading to the mining site; establish schools and training institutions to provide the youth with educational and vocational support; and also establish health institutions in the area.
He re-emphasised on the need for the right and adequate safety measures.
Mr Baba said he would within the next few days be in the Constituency to commiserate with the bereaved families, and appealed for calm in the face of the incident.
