Kumasi, Nov. 11, GNA - A parade of the various security agencies and veterans and a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, has been held at the Cenotaph Square, Kumasi, in honour of those who perished in World War I.
The solemn occasion was also to pay tribute to security personnel who have perished in the line of duty.
The mounted guard made up of 180 officers and men of the security agencies was under the command of Warrant Officer (WO) II, Francis Osei, of the Fourth Infantry Battalion.
Brigadier-General Joseph Aphour, Commander in-charge of the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, laid a wreath on behalf of the security agencies, while Baffour Owusu Asare Amankwatia, Bantamahene, laid one on behalf of the traditional authorities.
Mr Simon Osei-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, laid a wreath on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, while Ex- WOI George Appiah laid one on behalf of the veterans.
At exactly 11 am, the siren was sounded amidst mournful dirges to signify the end of hostilities, this was followed by the reading of the Binyon verses by a war veteran.
The last post was then sounded, after which a two-minute silence was held in honour of the fallen heroes.
Prayers were said by the various religious faiths for the departed.
