Accra, May 17, GNA - Madam Freda Prempeh, Deputy Minister for Works and Housing has called for the insuring of Persons with Disability (PWDs) who are into artisanal works to ensure their safety.
She said it was time for cabinet to take a look at that to ensure they lived better lives.
The Deputy Minister raised these concerns when she visited an exhibition conference held in Accra and organized by the Samuel Wellington Botwey (SWEB) Foundation for institutions that offer assistance to PWDs, children and the vulnerable in the society.
It was done in collaboration with the 18 African countries under the Liliane Foundation Inclusion Network (LINC) in Netherlands to exhibit disability related works.
Ghana, Burundi, Benin, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroun, South Sudan and Tanzania were among the participatory countries.
Madam Prempeh said it was also urgent that they were helped to market their products in order that they get their capital back.
There should be a strategic place to exhibit their products and market them to attract more buyers.
“I am impressed and I will want to commend the organizers for putting up this program and I think they should promote themselves further so that the outside world will hear and see what they are doing,” the Minister stated.
Madam Prempeh said she was also impressed by what some Ghanaian parents did in support of the foundation and advised the organizers to spread their tentacles top rope more people in.
Mr David Norden Botwey, the Executive Director of SWEB, said the conference was for similar organizations such as SWEB and others in the 18 countries to network and compare notes in terms of what they do, their successes and how to improve on the quality of the programme.
He said the foundation was in partnership with five networks at the national level with 55 organizations and 22 parents support groups.
The Executive Director added that countries present would learn from each other to improve on the quality of products and services, among other variety of their activities.
Mr Botwey said the Foundation’s aim of advancing disability rights and inclusive development in Ghana was to improve issues of education in terms of persons with disability having the same rights as the able.
The products displayed were accessories, slippers, shopping bags, orthopedic boot, ankle piece boot, Denis drown, ankle splint, knee caps, conventional Knee Ankle Foot Orthotics (KAFO), standing frame, corrective caliper, special chair, hand splint and dorsal splint.
The exhibition brought together personalities such as Mr. Ron striker, Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana and others.
