Kumasi, March 25, GNA - Nana Poku Agyemang, President of the Kumasi Rotary Club, has said the Club is committed to the cause of protecting the environment from all forms of degradation.
The very survival of mankind, he said, was dependent on the environment, for which reason the Club had decided to embark on some innovative projects to improve the ecology and biodiversity.
Nana Agyemang, who is the Metropolitan Engineer for Kumasi, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said one of the initiatives was the Club's decision to officially adopt and maintain the wetlands located close to the offices of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
The move coincided with the International Day of Forests, which was marked on March 21, this year, on the theme "Forests and Education".
Following this development, the wetlands have now been christened 'Rotary Garden', and in pursuance of their noble objectives, Nana Agyemang formally planted a symbolic coconut tree seedling at the area.
He was assisted by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Osei Assibey-Assibey.
The Kumasi Rotary Club President pointed out that they would not relent in their resolve to raise awareness on how sustainably-managed forests provided a wide array of contributions to the wellbeing of mankind.
Mr. Assibey-Antwi said the KMA had over the last two years planted various tree species across the metropolis as part of efforts to restore the flora and fauna that once gave Kumasi its accolade as the 'Garden City of West Africa'.
