Koforidua, March. 18, GNA – Over 20 females who form the core of the New Juaben Senior High School (NJUASCO) Taekwondo club displayed skills to the admiration of teachers, staff and students at the 44th annual inter-house athletics competition held at the school at Koforidua.
The girls showed their self-defense skills, how to block and attack an opponent and how to throw a punch to hit the right target.
Mr Rapheal Sylvanus Akoto, Eastern Regional Taekwondo coach said, the training of females formed part of an ongoing programme, which seeks to educate and train girls to know and avoid attacks especially from their male counterparts.
He explained that, he has thought the students some defensive skills such as the chest block, under neck block and upper block, which he said was the most important blocks that girls should have as their self defensive skills.
This he said was key, in helping them whenever they find themselves in any dangerous or unfriendly environment.
Madam Vida Tutu, Physical Education Mistress of NJUASCO, said she was confident the performance exhibited by the girls was part of many good things that taekwondo was bringing to the school.
She expressed hope that, going forward all the girls in the school could be part of it to enjoy the numerous benefits that the sport offers, like self defense mechanisms and the ability to be focused both in academics and in life.
Miss Nagma Setor Akoto, a form one student who led the team said, she had been practicing for the past 14 years and as a result, the sport had helped to boost her self confidence and she was always on the alert and prepared to defend herself anytime she was confronted with any unpleasant situation.
Miss Susana Dwumah, also a form one student said, since joining taekwondo years ago, she has really improved her ability to think and do things and therefore advised her other female colleagues to actively participate in the sport.
