Dunkwa-on-Offin (C/R), March 15, GNA – Work is far behind schedule on the 5,000-capacity Youth Resource Centre to promote sporting activities and youth development at Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region.
The project, which started in May last year, and expected to be completed within nine months, is currently about 40 per cent complete and the contractor is asking for an extension.
This came to light when Mr Emmanuel Sin-Nyet Asigri Asigri, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, led the Board Members of the Authority to inspect the work done.
The team noted that the Government had not defaulted in releasing funds for the project and would not hesitate to terminate the contract if the contractors failed to step up work.
“We have been to other regions and I must say that we are not too impressed with the level of work done. We think that the contractor needs to put in more to complete the project,” Mr Asigri said.
Though the progress of work had been slow, the team was satisfied with the quality of work.
Mr Asigri reiterated government’s commitment towards providing avenues to develop the talents and skills of the youth to enable them to participate effectively in the development of the country.
Mrs Mariam Andoh-Mansu, the Project Architect, explained that the delay was due to the topography of the site and the heavy rainfall recorded in the area, among other site issues, which needed to be addressed.
She said the contractors had been asked to submit a new schedule of work to provide the actual time needed to complete the project.
Mrs Andoh-Mansu gave the assurance that despite the pressure, quality would not be compromised.
She said concerns of Persons with Disability (PWDs) were being factored into the construction to make the facility disability friendly.
“Quality has not been compromised and will never be compromised because at the end of the day, Ghana must be the ultimate beneficiary,” she stated.
The facility includes an ultra-modern sports stadium, an Information and Communication Technology centre, cafeteria, counselling centre, restaurant, and indoor games facilities.
The stadium would promote sporting activities including football, hockey, valley ball, basketball and athletics.
