Ada Technical Institute tutor dies in motor accident

Big-Ada, Mar. 12, GNA - A tutor at the Ada Technical Institute (ADATEC), died on Saturday when the motor bike he was riding crashed into the railings of the metal bridge spanning the Luhoe River at Luhoese, Big-Ada, plunging into the river together with the bike.

His body was recovered from the swift flowing river with the bike the next morning.

He was identified as David Eklu, a Mechanical Engineering Tutor, aged 46, a native of Atorkor near Anloga, in the newly created Anloga District of the Volta Region.

It is believed that the bike slipped because of a downpour, making the metal aluminium slabs forming the base of the bridge slippery.

The deceased was said to be travelling from Ada-Foah where he lived, to Big-Ada direction when the accident happened.

An eyewitness, who gave his name as Lomotey, whose family house is about 40 meters from the bridge, said while in the house on Saturday they heard a big bang on the bridge at about 1830 hours and rushed there. 

He said they found a male shoe on the bridge, and a motor helmet flowing on the Luhoe river, a tributary of the Volta River, and suspected the victim might have plunged into the water with his bike.

The witness said two of his cousins immediately dived into the river to help retrieve the victim alive and the bike but failed because the river was flowing swiftly.

He said they ended up salvaging only the helmet.

The witness said the next day, some fishermen who laid hooks in the river trapped the body while others dived and found the bike and pulled it out by rope, all in the presence of the police.

The witness said the metal bridge was always slippery whenever it rained, making many unsuspecting bike riders and drivers lose control and involving in many deadly accidents.

An Ada police source confirmed the story, saying there was an injury on the forehead of the deceased suspected to be as a result of the impact from the crash.

The source said the body had been sent to the police hospital morgue in Accra pending autopsy and investigations.

A source close to the School also confirmed the story.
