Accra, Mar. 6, GNA – The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) on Wednesday conducted a general clean-up exercise to ensure that patients, staff and clients of the Hospital celebrated the 62nd independence anniversary in a clean environment to promote good health.
The exercise was on the theme, “Commemorating 62nd Anniversary of Ghana’s Independence with a Clean-up Exercise” was participated by staff of all departments of the hospital including members of the Board of Directors, Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Laboratory Technicians, Sonographers, Administrators, student nurses, mortuary workers, and cleaners.
The exercise entailed scrubbing and mopping of floors, weeding and clearing all available rubbishes and cobwebs, cleaning windows, and painting of departments.
The hospital conducted the exercise in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited, and other private entities.
Dr Daniel Asare, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the KBTH in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said management of the Hospital decided to conduct the exercise on the Independence Day as no major activity was going to take place in Accra to enable staff allocate the needed time for the exercise.
The exercise, he said, was also an opportunity for staff of all departments to socialise and relate well with each other, adding that, “The patients will be the ultimate beneficiaries at the end”.
Dr Asare noted that one objective for conducting the exercise was to reduce the disease burden on the country, therefore, they were going to sustain it.
“We will look at the impact and continue to do the exercise on occasions and holidays. We divided ourselves into 200 teams, and some are cleaning the maternity, surgical, out-patient-departments, accident and emergency, mortuary, and laboratories.
The CEO explained that staff who were stationed at the wards were tasked to clean the wards while those who worked outside were in charge of cleaning the hospital’s compound.
Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, the Board Chairman of the KBTH urged the health workers to properly maintain the various departments of the Hospital after the exercise had been conducted.
“If you are a nurse in a beautiful attire or a doctor in a luxurious car and your ward is dirty, people may smile to you on the outside and yet have bad perceptions about you,” he said.
Some health workers and the public do not engage in healthy exercises for a long time, so an exercise like this would keep the participants active for a few hours and help to reduce hypertension and other cardio related problems that have become some of the leading causes of death in the country, he said.
Dr Boye who is also a Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku Constituency said: “The President wants to make Accra the neatest city in Africa but I want the message to spread that Korle-Bu has become the neatest town in Accra,” he said.
