Cape Coast, Jan. 23, GNA - Regional Heads of the Centre for National Culture (CNC) have appealed to Government to make the institution an autonomous entity to perform it's duties efficiently and effectively.
They said the practice where successive governments politically align them to various ministries, has diverted the focus of the organization with little emphasis on cultural promotion.
Madam Carl Oparebea, the Central Regional Director of CNC and the Dean of Directors and Accountants, made the appeal at a Conference of Regional Directors and Accountants in Cape Coast.
The event was held underthe theme "Contemporary Administration of Ghana's Culture, CNC in Perspective".
The centres are mandated with the powers to initiate policies and programmes for the dissemination and propagation of ideas to promote the country's national pride, solidarity and consciousness.
Madam Oparebea said cultural promotion is key to the growth and development of cultural institutions and make them relevant to human development to enhance the cultural life of the Ghanaian.
She urged the participants to collaborate effectively with stakeholders to enhance team work; be innovative and democratic to enhance the national cultural integration and cohesion.
The Dean of Directors and Accountants gave a run-down of some challenges including logistics, staff, and the inability of the Centre to retain a quantum of its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to support their activities.
Madam Oparebea said the centres served as places for research, training and capacity building platform and culture promotion and needed the requisite equipment to keep proper records on the country’s cultural heritage and historic sites.
She appealed to government to resource them adequately, adding that national development would not thrive as expected if Ghana’s cultural heritage remained in the dark.
Madam Janet Edna Nyame, the Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture an Creative Arts, said the meeting was intended to strengthen the bond between the managers of the regional cultural centres and the Ministry as well as share ideas and strategise to make the centres financially viable.
She said the Board would collaborate with and support Regional Directors and Accountants at the centres to initiate and implement programmes that would promote and deepen the country’s cultural heritage.
She said there were a myriad of challenges in the sector and announced plans and strategies by government to reverse the abysmal trend to make Ghana the best destination for tourism and investment promotions.
"We are aware of the numerous challenges that hinder the ability of staff of CNC to perform but such challenges should not deter you to do your best, she said, and urged them to show greater commitments and dedication to work while upgrading themselves to meet the global requirement for cultural administration and promotion.
Mr Benyameen Sam Keelson, Western Regional Director and the Secretary for CNC, advised the Directors to strive hard to identify, organise and mobilize various artistic resources in their respective regions and help develop the commercial potentials of such resources.
