Accra, Jan. 18, GNA - Mr Kwesi Amoako Atta, Minister for Roads and Highways, has announced that the African Development Bank and government’s funded Pokuasi Interchange project will be upgraded from its original three-tier to four-tier.
He said the completion date for the additional tier is 2020.
Mr Amoako Atta said this during a tour of the project sites with a team including Mr Anthony Karbo, Deputy Minister of Transport and some directors of allied agencies of the Ministry.
The project is being undertaken by Zhongmei Engineering Group Limited, with Messrs Associated Consultants Limited (ACON)/ Bigen Group as the consultant of the entire project under the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
Mr Amoako Atta said the upgrade of the project was a result of savings made after technical and engineering variations and modification conducted jointly by technical persons of the Ministry, the consultants, and the contractors.
The Minister commended the contractors for working ahead of schedule by playing a key role in the re-assessment of the project, which had led to the change.
“I am very pleased with what I have seen because you have demonstrated that you are committed to ensuring value for money. Your work is progressing faster than expected.
“You have proven that you deserve the contract. For the first time, I am happy and I wish all contractors in the country will emulate this honesty and sincerity,” he said.
The interchange, Mr Amoako Atta said when completed, would ease traffic congestion, improve urban mobility, which would benefit agro-industries located within the project zone, facilitate socio-economic activities and improve livelihoods.
The project, includes adjoining roads like the Awoshie-Pokuase link and the proposed Pokuase-Ritz-Motorway Roads.
He said it would provide vital integrated link, viable and sustainable transport infrastructure to reduce poverty, promote regional integration and make Ghana a transportation hub within the ECOWAS sub-region.
The Minister said in consonance with international practice and the nation’s quest to achieving sustainable development goals on environmental sustainability, provision has been made to plant trees and other ornamentals along the road.
“The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is particular about the inclusion of tree planting and flower planting at all road construction projects,” he said.
