Accra, Jan.17, GNA - Some Journalists have expressed deep sorrow over the gruesome murder of Ahmed Hussein-Sualah, a Member of the Tiger Eye PI team, describing it as barbaric.
They also called on the security agencies to marshal their forces to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
Mr Ahmed Hussein-Sualah, a Member of the Tiger Eye PI team was killed by unknown assailants on Wednesday.
The late Journalist was reported to have played a key role in the investigative piece of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Number 12 on football corruption and was reportedly shot three times, twice on the chest and another on the neck at Madina, a suburb of Accra.
Ghanaian Journalists in recent times have witnessed physical violent attacks from the security agencies and political activists thereby manifesting the deteriorating conditions of safety of journalists in a country that has had a positive press freedom track record over the years.
Media Foundation for West Africa report indicated that 17 journalists were attacked last year during their line of duty and warned that the country’s press freedom ratings could drop if the authorities and stakeholders failed to end the rampant attacks on Journalists.
Madam Joyce Gyekye, a broadcast journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation told the Ghana News Agency (GNA)in Accra on Thursday that, the incident has made the practice of investigative journalism scary in the country and could have dire consequences on national development.
She said if anyone had problems with the work of a journalists, the aggrieved person could petition the National Media Commission or the Ghana Journalists Association for redress, instead of attacking him or her.
Mr Kwaku Osei Bonsu, the Supervising Chief Editor at the Ghana News Agency, described the murder of his colleague journalist as appalling, noting that a journalist was not supposed to lose his life in the practice of his work.
He entreated the Police to conduct thorough investigations into the matter to apprehend the perpetrators.
Mr Yaw Ansah, a Chief Reporter with the GNA, averred that journalists were supposed to inform, educate and entertain and described the attack as a threat to journalism in Ghana, especially happening at a time the practice of journalism in the country was rated very high by global press freedom institutions.
Mr William Fiabu, a Senior photojournalist with the GNA expressed fear about the constant attack on journalists and urged the security apparatus to invite Mr Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central for questioning since he issued a threat on the Tiger Eye PI team last year following the undercover investigative piece, popularly called “Number 12”, which unravelled corruption in Ghana Football.
Mr Anku Morkporkpor, a Chief Reporter with the GNA, also corroborated the call for the Assin Central MP to be invited for questioning since the splashing of the photos of the Tiger Eye PI members on the social media and television with a promise to reward anyone who could deal with the investigative team could have played a part in this unfortunate situation.
He said journalists were not enemies but partners in national development, therefore the public should co-operate with them to enhance development in the country.
