Sunyani, Dec. 14, GNA – World Vision International (WVI), a Christian humanitarian aid, development and advocacy organization, has pledged its unswerving commitment towards providing protection for children.
It has been working in Ghana to assist communities, institutions and government, to protect children against exploitation.
Mr. Gregory Dery, WVI’s Child Protection Manager, said the organization would continue with its activities aimed at promoting the development and growth of children.
Even though the communities were beginning to appreciate the sensitization drive by the NGO, there was the need to rally more support to respond appropriately to issues that affected young persons.
Mr Dery was speaking at a three-day training workshop on Child Protection and Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) held for journalists in the Brong-Ahafo Region, in Sunyani.
He called for duty bearers to refocus their work plans and to become keenly interested issues affecting children.
Ghana’s ratification of the Children’s Rights Charter obliged it to re-tune its laws to safequard the rights of children, their protection from exploitation and other abuses.
Mr Dery said the WVI had empowered a number of institutions including the media, faith-based leaders, and child protection committees to respond appropriately to issues confronting young people.
He spoke of the need for the media to show strong interest and put spotlight on issues relating to child’s safety, welfare and development.
Mr Dery reminded journalists to be more professional in their handling of matters involving minors and juveniles.
He gave the assurance that the WVI would continue to partner the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to sensitize media practitioners and build their capacity to better report on child rights and protection.
He called for all - community leaders, faith based organizations and institutions responsible for the protection of children, to play their expected roles well to stop their abuse.
The participants, drawn from various media houses in the region, were taken through topics such as “The overview of child protection and child marriage in the Brong Ahafo Region”, “Improve sanitation now: the role of the media”, “WASH: a panacea for a healthy nation”, “Child online protection”, “Media investigations and report on child marriages” and “The role of cultural leaders in the fight to end harmful practices.” .
