Accra, Dec. 10, GNA - The Cancer Support Network of Ghana (CSNGH) has donated GHc 2000 to Madam Esther Yakubu who has being suffering from breast cancer for years.
Ms Yakubu first noticed the disease four years ago and reported to a local hospital but was told nothing was wrong.
However, as the mass continued to grow bigger, she was referred to several specialists for further evaluation and management but she couldn’t go to any of the appointments, as she couldn't afford the payments for the visits.
Her call for help for various treatments, which includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy and possible surgery, caught the eye of CSNGH, a Non-Governmental Organization who donated GH¢2000 to aid in treatment.
The vice president of CSNGH, Bernice Boakye Yiadom explained that the nature of the story triggered them to take immediate actions.
“Our foundation is born out of compassion; we are a group that are passionate about helping those who are suffering from cancer. We realize that when people get the news with a diagnosis of cancer, they are so disturbed and worried about the emotional, social and financial burden associated with such diagnosis. Cancer Support Network of Ghana is here to offer such support to these patients as they fight back to good health.”
She revealed that the donation is as a result of a hint by a member of the foundation as the members are encouraged to bring to the attention of the NGO.
“As soon as we heard about the situation, we quickly organized ourselves and met with Ms Yakubu and when we saw her, we realized her situation was quite sad. In addition to not having the money for the proposed treatment, she had no food to eat and no money for transportation from Mampong to Korle bu for her treatment. So we decided to quickly rally ourselves and step in to help her.” she said.
Ms Boakye Yiadom further emphasized that the foundation hopes to create awareness of cancer and encourage people to get screened as part of the foundation’s mission.
According to Ms. Yakubu, the ailment is causing severe pains in her breast, which was unbearable.
She praised the foundation for the kind gesture saying, “I couldn’t believe such a day will come and I wasn’t expecting this”.
Also present for the donation was the Organizer of Cancer Support Network of Ghana, Ms Ramatu Sumani, and two of the organization’s medical personnel’s, Ms Vida Elikplim a nurse and Mr. Eric Odei Brobbey, Senior nursing officer at Korle Bu.
CSNGH as an NGO operates on donation and support from individuals who believe in helping those affected by cancer.
CSNGH is of the belief that no individual should walk the cancer journey alone and therefore welcome support from organizations and individuals to help affected persons.
