Tema, Dec. 6, GNA - Trainees of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) in the Tema Metropolis have undergone safety training at the Tema Port of the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority (GPHA) ahead of their temporal engagement.
The over 200 trainees under the Revenue Ghana Model assigned to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, were taken through safety regulations and proper use of equipment at the port, organizational health and safety, international safety standards among others.
Speaking at the orientation for trainees in Tema, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Malik Punamane., Tema Port Security Manager, indicated that the GPHA priotised safety and security at all levels in accordance with international standards and best practices.
He said strict adherence to safety regulations at the country's ports were non negotiable, adding that a safe and secure working environment for port ushers and staff would ultimately lead to high productivity.
Nonetheless, Lt. Col. Punamane cautioned the trainees to be critical about their safety as failure to adhere to safety regulations could lead to disciplinary actions.
He called on them to make adequate use of the opportunity offered them by government to learn on the job and keep abreast of the current developments at the port.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Jimmy Nab-Daisie, Fire and Safety Manager at Tema Port, emphasized the need for compliance to safety regulations at the port to prevent needless accidents.
He said control measures had been adequately put in place to curtail unforseen fires, cautioning the trainees to stay vigilant and not to put themselves in harm's way whiles carrying out their duties.
In compliance to applicable regulations and standards, Mr Nab-Daisie said the GPHA had provided a safe and healthy environment for port ushers, operators and the community.
He added that considering the scope of work at the ports and maritime environment, the authority was committed to implementing best practices that minimised and eliminated environmental impact, health and other safety risk in port operations.
Ms Anita Appiah, a participant under the Revenue Model, said the training had been rather instructive and thanked government for the opportunity.
