Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), Dec. 6, GNA - The Ghana Bamboo Bicycle Initiative (GBBI) has donated 50 bamboo bicycles, headgears, 150 casual shoes and t-shirts to day students of three senior high schools in Dormaa to facilitate their movement to and from school.
The schools include Dormaa Senior High School, Adehyeman Senior High School and Wamanafo Senior High School.
Some of the students spend four hours everyday walking to and from school, but with the presentation of the bicycles, movement is expected to be a lot easier and quicker for them.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Madam Bernice Dapaah, Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Bamboo Bicycle Initiative urged the students to study hard to become productive and useful citizens.
"Our company is a Ghanaian company set up to manufacture bicycles made from bamboos for the local market but through hard work, diligence and commitment we have transcended beyond the local market to the international market," she said.
She said the GBBI would not focus only on bicycle donation but plans to supply shoes to some primary, Junior High Schools (JHS) and Senior High Schools (SHS) in Dormaa to complement government's efforts in the free Senior High School education programme.
"In subsequent years we are going to ensure we donate a pair of shoes to every student in the Dormaa Area.
Madam Dapaah said her outfit is taking advantage of the one district one factory programme to create more than 500 jobs in the country to augment government's efforts at generating jobs.
She said the donation follows a needs assessment carried out among the beneficiaries urging them to justify the reasons for which they have been presented with the bicycles by performing harder in their academic activities.
"You would be monitored to find out how the bicycles are contributing to enhancing your academic and social lives," she said.
Barimah Dei Kusi, the Ankobeahene of Dormaa Traditional Area, appealed to the CEO of GBBI to take advantage of the availability of lands and raw materials such as bamboos in the area and set up a factory to produce similar bicycles to create employment for the youth.
He expressed appreciation for the donations and called for more of such kind gestures.
Mr Thomas Armstrong Asante, the Event Coordinator and Head of Monitoring and Inspectorate Division, Ghana Education Service, Dormaa, said the GBBI has made similar presentations elsewhere to health workers, basic schools, and some senior high schools.
She said the organisation’s good works and significant contributions to development has earned it international acclaim in many places including the United States of America.
