Takoradi, Dec. 6, GNA - Mr Solomon Kusi Ampofo, the Programme Coordinator of Friends of the Nation, has said it is untrue that disability is as a result of sin or curses and it is imperative for such people to enjoy the rights and privileges as defined under the 1992 constitution of the country.
He said the Ghana Disability Law, 2006 (Act 715) was passed with the aim of ending discrimination against people with disabilities and wondered why after the ten-year moratorium given by the Act for buildings to be made disability-friendly, many are yet to meet the expectation.
He said this at an event organized by the Western Regional branch of the Ghana Federation for Disability at Sekondi .
The event, organized to address issues concerning the behaviour of others towards the disabled, was held under the theme: "Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality".
Mr Ampofo said about a billion people are disabled globally of which 80 percent live in developing countries and three thirds of them are women.
He said the Ministry of Education should by a legislative instrument provide schools and institutions in every region with the necessary equipment to enable them participate meaningfully in academic affairs.
Mr Ampofo said the government intends to provide free education for persons with disability and establish special schools for them if they are unable to enrol in formal schools.
