Juaso (Ash), Nov. 21, GNA – The Asante-Akim South Municipal Police Command has held a day’s orientation workshop for security personnel of various departments, agencies and private institutions in the Municipality.
The move forms part of efforts to strengthen partnership between participants and the police to ensure effective security in various institutions.
Participants were drawn from institutions such as the judiciary, health facilities, Forestry Commission, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Ghana Education Service, Electoral Commission, filling stations, financial institutions and the Municipal Assembly.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Andrew Anyani, the Municipal Police Commander, opening the workshop, said the past year had witness series of theft in offices of various institutions despite the presence of security officers.
This, he said, underlined the need to build the capacity of security officers of the institutions in order to provide adequate security in their workplaces in a competent and proactive manner.
He counselled the participants not to leave their duty post unattended to at any point in time, adding that such practices left room for criminals to strike at the least opportunity.
In the event that other colleagues were scheduled to take over, they should not leave the premises under any circumstance before the arrival of the one expected to take over.
He entreated them to pay attention to the movement of all suspicious characters and take steps to foil any attempt to temper with any property belonging to the institution.
Detective Inspector Isaac Obrako Sarpong, facilitator of the workshop, spoke against the habit of taking alcohol while at post, saying that security personnel had no reason to adopt that lifestyle.
He said such negative practices as well as late reporting to duty were some of the security lapses that led to theft and burglaries.
He told them to be careful not to temper with evidence while arresting suspected thieves, since the evidence must be admissible in court during prosecution.
Mr. Gaston Defoe, a Senior Civic Education Officer of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), advised the participants to work with honesty to protect properties placed under their care as responsible citizens.
