Kumasi, Nov. 21, GNA – A fire explosion at a gas filling station at Krofoum in the Kumasi Metropolis on Tuesday morning, is reported to have claimed the lives of three persons.
Several commercial shops near the filling station have also been razed down by the fire, which is said to have started during a discharge of gas by a tanker in the early hours of the day.
Though the Ghana News Agency cannot confirm the deaths, an eyewitness told our reporters that, three persons, including a security man at the filling station got severely burnt during the explosion and they were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in a hopeless situation.
The filling station, which is cited in the middle of a residential area, shared a fenced wall with a school, a church, a washing bay and several other commercial shops in an area between Krofoum and Tafo-Nhyiaeso.
When the GNA got to the scene, officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were still battling to douse the fire, which had spread to the nearby shops.
The fire had not entered any nearby house but the fire officers had positioned themselves to prevent any eventualities.
Some residents told the GNA that this was the second fire explosion at the facility.
Mr Kwabena Nsenkyire, Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) told newsmen at the scene, that he had on several occasions warned shop owners around the area to move away since that was a disaster prone area.
He blamed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for not enforcing its bylaws, which sought to prevent people from trading in unauthorized places.
