Kumasi, Nov. 13, GNA - A 13-member reconstituted board for the Ashanti Regional Peace Council, has been inaugurated in Kumasi with a call on members to work hard to maintain the peace in the region.
Its work takes immediate effect, following the dissolution of the former board, which served for four years under the chairmanship of Professor. Seth Opuni Asiamah.
Members of the new board are Rev. Fr. Anthony Frangtana Naah, from the Catholic Bishops Conference, Bishop Christopher Nyarko Andam, representing the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Godwin Tito-Agyei, from the Ghana Pentecostal Council and Rev. Dr. Victor Osei, also standing in for the National Council for Christian and Charismatic Churches.
Others are; Barffour Asabere Kogyawoasu Ababio II, Practitioners of African Traditional Religion, Dr. Esmeranda Manful, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed, Al-Sunnah Muslims and Nana Birago Ababio, Christian Chiefs and Queen Mothers Association.
The rest are, Barima Offe Akwasi Okogyeasuo, Regional House of Chiefs, Mr. Hakeem Baidoo, Ahmadiyya Muslims, Ustaz Ahmed Seidu, Tijaaniya Muslims, Rt. Rev. Ben Nuhu Abubakar and Ms. Margaret Boafo-Atiemo, both nominees of the Regional Coordinating Council.
Bishop Christopher Nyarko Andam, also the Methodist Diocesan Bishop of Kumasi, was elected the chairman for the new board immediately after its inauguration in an election supervised by Mr. Serebour Quaicoo, the Regional Director of the Electoral Commission.
Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, Board Chairman of the National Peace Council (NPC), in an address said all the ten regions in Ghana were challenged by numerous and diverse conflict situations, with Ashanti having its own fair share.
These conflicts, he said, did not only threatened the peace but also left in its trail, adverse effects on socio-economic development.
He said violent conflicts often takes a toll on human capital, adding that, funds earmarked for infrastructure development were rather diverted to maintain peace.
Ghana, according to him, could not travel that path in its quest to build a prosperous nation and called on all stakeholders to collectively support efforts to ensure peace.
Mr. Simon Osei Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister applauded the outgoing board for the level of commitment they showed to maintain peace in the region, in the face of numerous challenges.
He was hopeful that the new board would build on the successes and adopt effective strategies that would ensure proactive and timely interventions to curtail all forms of conflicts and disputes in the region.
He pledged the unflinching support of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to their activities, saying that, their services were critical to the developmental agenda of the RCC.
