Accra, Oct. 29, GNA - Six formers Ministers of Communications have called on government to increase investment in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in order to accelerate the nation's socioeconomic development.
They said ICT investments could play a crucial role in fuelling the growth of Ghana’s gross domestic product (GDP) through increased economic activity, innovation and productivity.
The former Communications Ministers who made the call include Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Mr Felix Owusu-Agyepong, Professor Benjamin Aggrey Ntim, Mr Haruna Iddrisu and Dr Edward Omane Boamah.
Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, the Speaker of Parliament and a former Communications Minister, was represented by Mr Fredrick Opare Ansah, a Member of Parliament Select Committee on Communications.
The former Communications Ministers made the call during a panel discussion at the climax of the National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2018 held under the theme: "A Safer Digital Ghana" at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra.
The function was chaired by Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Communications Minister.
The former Communications Ministers also called for an increase in ICT research and capacity building of Ghanaians.
They advised that the government in awarding ICT contracts must make sure that local companies were given a percentage to execute, which according to them would go a long way to build them up.
They also appealed to Government to ensure that Ghana's Critical National Information infrastructures were protected from cyber fraudsters.
In addition, the former Communications Ministers urged Government to address existing gaps in Ghana's cybercrime and cyber security legislation.
