Tema Oct 16, GNA - The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) has organized a Hand Washing Day as part of its outreach to sensitize locals on the need to keep their hands clean.
The exercise, which was held at the Aggrey Road Basic School in Tema Community Two, was also to ensure that the practice of regular hand washing with soap which was a barrier to diseases and infections, became part of the school children.
Speaking during the ceremony, Madam Theresa Anafi, said “most people have failed to cultivate the habit of washing their hands. Some people would say they do not have access to potable water, but sickness is more expensive than the simple practice of washing hands.”
She observed the limited hand washing advocacy that existed in the country and hinted on the importance of making funds available to promote hand washing in schools.
She called all to join in the hand washing campaign to make it a success “if we are to prevent a lot of diseases that have fought humanity for years”.
Madam Anafi called for national policies that favoured the implementation of proper hand washing with soap under running water, and the provision of improved conditions of washing facilities at school.
She also observed the need to incorporate hand washing with soap under running water in the curricula of schools to enable the school children cultivate the habit at an early age.
The Community Development Officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the TWMA, Mr. Alex Tetteh, observed the need to run the campaign throughout the year and make the practice part of” our everyday life”.
As part of the celebrations, the pupils of Aggrey Road Basic School were taught the proper way of washing their hands with soap under running water through a public demonstration.
