Akwatia (E/R), Oct. 1, GNA – Over 300 disabled persons in the Denkyembour District have attended a day’s workshop for training in liquid and bar soaps making.
The workshop was organized by the Department of Social Development of the Denkyembour District Assembly of the Eastern Region.
The Assembly intends to hold another workshop to teach the disabled how to make antiseptic (dettol) and parazone.
The District Social Welfare Officer, Mr Bernard Abangiba Ayangiba, said government was determined to give various forms of assistance, including finance for the disabled to be on their own and to be self-supporting.
He advised those who would receive financial assistance to invest in ventures that would yield regular income to them.
Mr Ayangiba explained that there were 1,107 registered disabled in the District and monies released at intervals would only benefit some of them at a time and called for patience for everyone to have his turn.
The Social Welfare Officer called on participants at the workshop to use the skills acquired to set up small-scale industries.
Mr Okyere Yeboah of the District Directorate of Education responsible for the disabled in schools, appealed to parents to send their disabled wards to schools and not to hide them.
He said the disabled like anyone else in society could learn to be of benefit to society and themselves.
Miss Tracy Owusu of the Department Social Development said there were a number of things the disabled could do including basket weaving and beads making.
