Accra, Oct 01, GNA - The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and the Dag Hammarskjold Foundation (DHF) based in Uppsala, Sweden, are poised to hold the annual Kofi Annan - Dag Hammarskjöld (KA-DH) lectures Wednesday, 3rd October in Accra.
Instituted in 2013, the annual KA-DH lectures, this year would be on the theme “Preventing Armed Conflicts; Identifying and Mitigating Risks”.
A statement issued by the KAIPTC and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the KAIPTC and the DHF instituted the annual KA-DH lectures in honour of the two former Secretary-Generals of the United Nations (UN).
It said subsequently, an inaugural lecture hosted by the Centre was held in February 2013.
It said Mr Adama Dieng, Special advisor to the UN Secretary-General, would be the speaker of this year’s event.
It said prior to his appointment as Special Adviser by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, he had previously worked as a consultant for many international organizations including United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Organization of African Unity, the Ford Foundation, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Organization internationale de la Francophonie, the International Committee of the Red Cross, among others.
It said he was also a Council Member of the Observatoire Panafricain de la Démocratie, a member of the executive committee of Africa Leadership Forum and a board member of the International Institute of Human Rights.
The statement said at the heart of efforts to maintain peace and security on the continent, and in the world, were the twin mechanisms; prevention and partnerships.
It said ongoing reforms within the UN, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which was the strategic framework for socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next five decades, underscore the need to address the root causes of conflict and to deepen cooperation and engagement between regional and international to assuage identified risks to peace and security.
It said in support of this continental and global agenda, and to strengthen risk analysis and how to translate these into actionable joint responses to prevent violence and armed conflict in Africa, the KAIPTC and the DHF would hold the annual KA-DH Kofi annual lectures.
The statement said Dr Christine Evans – Klock, UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, would be the Chairperson for the lecture.
It said roundtable session would ensue after the lecture comprising a group of 10-12 high-level individuals working at the director level at the African Union, select Regional Economic Communities, the United Nations and civil society organisations.
It said the session would focus on risks assessment and response, challenges and lessons learnt from the perspectives and experiences of participating organizations, and ways to enhance inter-organizational co-operation and coordination.
The statement said the lecture would be attended by government functionaries, members of the diplomatic corps, senior military officers, defence advisors, senior police officers, the academia, civil society organizations and persons working in the diplomatic service.
