Bolgatanga, Sept 28, GNA - Mr Peter Amoako, Regional Director at the Urban Roads in the Upper East Region has announced major facelift for roads in the region.
The selected roads to be fixed would include upgrading of some of the roads in the Bolgatanga, Navrongo and Bawku Municipalities.
He said he had made a strong proposal to his Ministry to justify the urgent need to upgrade roads in the three Municipalities and gave the assurance that the proposal had gone through.
He noted that the central government was most likely to consider developing the roads from part of the Chinese loan to be used to improve on infrastructure across the country.
Mr Amoako who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bolgatanga indicated that in addition, his office had sent a letter to the central government to consider releasing funds for the department to fix some roads within the region, noting that, it was a general plan to improve on the road network within the region.
He said the roads, most of which are in bad state, were dotted throughout the region, including some abandoned by contractors that needed urgent attention.
The Director mentioned the roads in the Bolgatanga Municipality as Zaare road, the continuation of the Tanzui-Shirigu road, some selected road network within the Dapooretindongo area, Tindonmolgo-Sherigu Storm drains at Sawaba and upgrading of the Gambibgo road among others.
In the Bawku Municipality, a total of about eight kilometres of road network has been considered while same goes for the Navrongo Municipality.
He said all these roads and many others would be worked on as soon as the Chinese loan for infrastructure development was approved.
Mr Amoako further revealed that some road projects within the Bolgatanga Municipality have been abandoned because the contractors had left site and indicated that his outfit had recommended that the central government terminates such contracts and repackage them to be re-awarded locally.
The Regional Director hinted that contractors working on the Bawku road had suspended work due to the heavy rains recorded in the region this year, and gave the assurance that work would resume as soon as the rains subsided. This, he added, would ensure proper monitoring for value for money.
He called on residents and opinion leaders of the various communities to give maximum support to the road contractors irrespective of where they may come from to facilitate the speedy completion of the road projects in the region.
