Akyempim (W/R), Sept. 26, GNA - Chiefs in the Wassa Fiase Traditional Area of the Western Region have embarked on a demonstration to protest against the deplorable state of the Tarkwa-Takoradi Highway.
The chiefs clad in red and black cloths together with their citizens blocked the Tarkwa-Takoradi road at Akyempim for over two hours to state their displeasure.
This caused heavy vehicular traffic and travellers who usually ply that route to school and work every morning had to abandon their vehicles and walk to their various destinations.
Addressing the media during the demonstration, Nana Dr Adarkwa Bediako II, Gyasehene of Apinto Divisional Council, said the road, which connects the northern part of the Western Region to the southern part, has become un-motorable for several years.
He said the road has become so bad that they had to lead the campaign to have it done.
The Gyasehene said about a week ago seven children returning from school lost their lives due to the poor nature of the road.
He said motorists as well as commuters, struggle to ply the road, especially during the raining season.
He said several efforts made by Mr George Meriku Duker, the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsueam, and Mr Glibert Kennedy Asmah, the Municipal Chief Executive, to get the road fixed has also proved futile.
Nana Bediako II urged government to take immediate steps to improve the status of the road and end the sufferings of the residents.
Some angry drivers who spoke to the Ghana News Agency have threatened to boycott the 2020 general polls if the road was not fixed.
