Kumasi, Aug 10, GNA - President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo has performed the ceremony to signal the start of massive road construction works in the Ashanti Region.
As part of this 260 kilometres (km) stretch of roads within the Kumasi Metropolis and its adjoining municipalities are going to be constructed under the Greater Kumasi Town Roads Face lift Project.
The Lake Road is also going to be built into a dual carriageway to ease congestion.
There would be an asphalt overlay of another 135km of roads within the city to deal with the issue of potholes.
President Akufo-Addo said critical bridges and footbridges would be constructed alongside the asphalt overlay of 10km within the project area.
He also spoke of the rehabilitation of a total of 100km of roads in Kumasi and the Mampong Municipality.
Added to this would be the construction of 100km stretch of feeder roads and highways in region.
Already, work is on-going on the remodelling of four roundabouts between Ejisu and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to reduce traffic congestion on that road corridor.
President Akufo-Addo expressed upset with the bad nature of roads in Kumasi – a strategic business destination in West Africa, saying, that was not befitting of the city’s status.
"That is why my government through the Ministry of Roads and Highways has begun work in the various critical projects to fix the problem."
He reminded the Ministry to make sure that there was adequate and proper supervision of all the projects so that there would be quality job - value for money.
He gave the assurance that people affected by the construction works would be fairly and adequately compensated and asked that they cooperated with the Ministry for smooth implementation of the projects.
President Akufo-Addo entreated Ghanaians to join hands with government to bring progress and prosperity to every part of the country.
