Tarkwa (W/R), August 3, GNA - Ten people who were caught illegally mining at Tarkwa in the Western Region have been granted bail by a Tarkwa Circuit court.
The accused are made up of four Chinese and six Ghanaians.
They pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and illegal mining and would reappear in court on 23 August, 2018.
The Chinese nationals are Tang Chag Yi, 46, Zhang Xin, 44, Hu Jiog, 46 and So Qian Min, 57 are all miners.
Mr Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, the presiding judge, granted each of the Chinese nationals GH¢30,000 bail and also ordered them to deposit their passports with the court registry.
Their Ghanaians were however granted GH¢15,000 bail each.
They are Augustus Amoh 36, farmer, Joseph Ennison 45, carpenter, Micheal Kuliams 49, electrician, Mohammed Aziz 37, welder, Yakubu Shaibu, 20, farmer and Richmond Acheampong, 28, unemployed.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Essel-Dadzie told the court that on July 9, 2018 the operation vanguard team based in Tarkwa were scouting around to ensure that the ban on illegal and small scale mining activities were adhered to.
She said when the team arrived at Mohammed Brother small scale mining site opposite Tarkwa Senior High School, they saw the accused busily prospecting for gold without license.
ASP Essel-Dadzie said they were then arrested and handed over to the police in Tarkwa for further investigations.
