Ho, July 13, GNA - Mr Felix B. Chaahaah, Chief Director, Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), has challenged stakeholders in sanitation in the Region to “up their game” for the Region to attain Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2019.
He said the Region had not been doing well on the national league table and tasked the stakeholders to put in more efforts and work as a team to meet the target.
Mr Chaahaah who was speaking at the second Quarter Regional Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee on Sanitation (RICCS) meeting in Ho, noted that most districts assemblies (DAs) were too slow in acting on and forwarding information to and from the Coordinating Council, derailing efforts at fighting the menace in the districts.
He called on the DAs to involve Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in sanitation initiatives and projects for effective campaign against the practice.
Mr Felix Bosonkui, Volta Regional Focal Person, Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), Monitoring and Evaluation, said the implementation of the Urine Divert Dry Total (UDDT) was contradicting the purpose of CLTS.
UDDT is a toilet facility system that separates urine from faeces with the possibility of collecting and processing them for agricultural use, also aimed at helping end open defecation.
He said whilst CLTS was triggering people in communities to own household toilets facilities to end open defecation, UDDT was constructing toilet facilities for communities and schools for free, thwarting efforts at convincing community members to own household toilets.
“UDDT is demotivating the concept of self-ownership,” Mr. Bosonkui added.
Mr Joshua Ofosuhene, Regional Coordinator for UNICEF Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) said 11 districts were declared ODF between April and June this year.
