Tuobodom (B/A), May 28, GNA – Tomato farmers in the Techiman North District of Brong-Ahafo Region have appealed to government to adequately resource the appropriate research institutions to produce good seeds for the production of the quality fresh tomatoes.
According to the farmers, the Ghanaian tomato traders and importers have been buying from Burkina Faso (BF) because of the quality of the Burkinabe products.
Mr. Baffuor Afrifa, the Chairman of the District Tomato Farmers Association made the appeal when he outlined the challenges of the farmers at a meeting of stakeholders organised by the District Assembly on Thursday at Tuobodom, the District capital.
Other stakeholders in attendance were Mr. George Oduro, a Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr. Peter Mensah, the District Chief Executive, a number of local tomato traders, some executive members of the Ghana National Tomato Traders and Transporters Association (GNTTTA) and some Assembly Members in the area.
It aimed at identifying the concerns of the farmers and traders to see how those challenges could be addressed by the government.
Mr. Afrifa mentioned a number of challenges and emphasised that deplorable feeder roads in the District were militating against the progress of the tomato farming business.
He explained the situation had occurred because drivers could not ply the roads to cart the harvested tomatoes from the farm gates to the local market, adding that led to glut of the commodity and consequently financial loss to the farmers.
Mr. Oduro responded to the issues and concerns raised by the farmers and assured that government was making relentless efforts with the introduction of various policies, programmes and initiatives for the tomato farming industry to flourish and make the Ghanaian economy robust, resilient and buoyant.
