Accra, May 18, GNA – Ghana will host the 2019 Pan African Festival (PANAFEST) scheduled from July to August 2019.
The festival significantly marks the 400th anniversary of the first landing of enslaved Africans in James Town, the capital of the English colony on the continent of North America.
Mr Charles Wiredu, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, who announced this a press launch of this year’s African Union Day celebration, said the event would present a golden opportunity for removing the veil of silence over the indescribable sacrifices made by Africans and the application their tremendous skills, talents and life-blood to the accumulation of wealth in the New World.
He said: “Being a singular largest event that promises to bring Africans together from across the continent and from all walks of life, I do not hesitate to use this modest platform to rally all and sundry to the cause and to invite all AU member States to join in the massive commemoration of PANAFEST 2019”.
Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy, Chairperson of the PANAFEST Foundation, commended the Foreign Ministry for agreeing to work with the Foundation in organising the Festival in 2019.
She emphasised the need for Ghana to situate herself to drawback her people to deliberate on how to set the agenda for development on the continent.
She, therefore, called on AU Member States to partner Ghana to showcase the African heritage during the festival.
On AU Day celebration, she said the Africa Union was not a Union of States but a Union of people and urged the African people to start discussing the welfare of the people and come up with solution to ensure that AU was responsive to their demands.
